To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow - Audrey Hepburn

I think hope is one of the reasons I fell head over heels for gardening. Hope for the next season to come and for blooms to be brings me peace in the present and gratitude when I get to see things come to life in the garden.

As Autumn begins to peek around the corner it is a cue to me that it’s time to start planning and planting! September is a great time to plant fall flowers.  The chrysanthemums have arrived at garden centers and I can’t think of any other flower that says fall quite like a mum! My daughter and I picked one up yesterday and it is already potted on my porch!

Chrysanthemums are a great jumping off point for fall flowers, but if you are looking to add color in your garden and have it last from now until next spring I have some suggestions.  We’re lucky here in the valley that our winters are really pretty mild and certain flowers planted now can last through the winter and bloom bigger in the spring lasting sometimes through May.  My favorites are Iceland Poppies, Snapdragons and Pansies.  These can be purchased at almost any garden center from now to November.

This is also a great time to consider bulbs.  I’m talking Tulips, Daffodils, Ranunculus and Anemones.  Bulbs get planted in the fall then in spring they emerge from their beds adding beauty to any space and joy to your heart!

Flowers require some intentionality and a little bit of dirty work but I promise they are worthy of the pursuit!

I hope you feel inspired to take one of these paths in your garden be it potted mums, planted Iceland poppies or giving tulips a try.  Whichever you choose I wish you Happy Planting!
